용기(勇氣) - '평범한 일상에서 자라나는 삶의 태도

“용기는 거창한 감정이 아니라, 날마다 하나님을 신뢰하며 살아내는 소박한 결단입니다. 니글의 잎사귀처럼, 다윗의 일상처럼, 그리고 바울의 고백처럼—”

 

어제, 교회 예배 설교 말씀을 듣는 중에 J.R.R. 톨킨의 짧은 소설 『니글의 이파리(Leaf by Niggle)』를 다시 마주하게 되었습니다.

​

이 소설의 주인공 니글은 한적한 마을에 사는 화가입니다. 그는 언젠가 한 그루의 커다란 나무를 그리고 싶다는 꿈을 품고, 그 나무의 한 잎사귀를 그리는 데 온 정성을 쏟습니다.

​

니글은 작품에 대한 완벽한 이상과 그 나무의 거대한 형상을 머릿속에 그리고 있었지만, 현실은 그리 녹록지 않았습니다.

​

이웃의 끊임없는 부탁과 예상치 못한 사건들이 그의 작업을 계속해서 방해했고, 그는 점점 지치고 고단해졌습니다.

​

그가 고요한 작업실에서 캔버스에 바르는 한 붓 한 붓은, 그 자체로는 작고 사소한 일이었지만, 그 안에 담긴 마음과 정성은 결코 작지 않았습니다.

​

니글은 자신이 그린 한 장의 잎사귀가 완성되지 못할까 두려워하면서도, 매일 조금씩 그 결실을 위해 인내했습니다.

​

그러나 결국 그는 완성하지 못한 채 ‘죽음’을 상징하는 긴 여정을 떠나야만 했습니다.

​

그가 세상에 남긴 것은 단 하나의 잎사귀뿐이었지만, 죽음 이후 그가 맞이한 세계는 놀랍게도 평생 꿈꿔온 완전한 나무와 풍경으로 가득 차 있었습니다.

​

그 작고 미완의 잎사귀를 하나님은 받아 주셨고, 하나님의 손길 아래 그 잎사귀는 완전한 나무가 되어 있었습니다.

​

이 장면을 떠올리며, 저는 다시 다윗을 생각하게 되었습니다.

​

사자의 위협 속에서도 양을 지키던 한 목동. 가족에게조차 인정받지 못했던 보잘것없는 소년. 그러나 그는 알고 있었습니다—

​

자신의 하루를 지켜보시는 분이 하나님이시라는 사실을. 그 믿음이 다윗의 일상 속 예배가 되었습니다.

​

누구의 시선도 닿지 않는 자리에서 하나님 앞에 최선을 다하는 삶. 그 하루하루의 선택이 다윗 안에서 ‘용기’로 자라났습니다.

​

골리앗 앞에 섰던 날도 마찬가지였습니다. 다윗에게는 그것이 단지 ‘하나님을 사랑하는 사람으로서 참을 수 없는 순간’이었을 뿐입니다.

​

그 마음 깊은 곳에서 우러난 분노와 결단은 곧 하나님께 드리는 예배였고, 그날도 그는 평소처럼, 일상 속의 용기로 살아냈습니다.

​

사울 왕은 그에게 갑옷과 칼을 주려 했지만, 다윗이 선택한 무기는 양을 지킬 때 쓰던 물맷돌이었습니다. 평범한 일상의 도구로, 믿음의 싸움을 감당한 것입니다.

​

지금 우리가 살아가는 세상도 마찬가지입니다. 무겁고 강퍅한 현실은 또 다른 골리앗처럼 우리 앞에 서 있습니다.

​

그러나 니글의 소박한 마음처럼, 다윗의 정직한 정성처럼 살아갈 때, 하나님은 이미 우리를 위해 완전한 나무와 위대한 승리를 준비하고 계십니다.

​

진정한 용기란, 내가 지금 서 있는 자리에서 하나님의 일하심을 신뢰하며 주어진 일상을 예배로 살아내는 것입니다.

​

용기는 감정이 아니라 날마다의 결단이며, 삶의 방향입니다.

​

영웅 영화처럼 고난을 단숨에 뛰어넘는 능력이 아니라, 포기하고 싶은 순간마다 다시 일어나는 평범한 반복 속에서 자라나는 믿음의 성품입니다.

​

용기는 인간의 본능적 두려움 속에서도 믿음으로 자신의 자리를 지키며 끝까지 최선을 다하려는 그 마음— 바로 그 마음이 '용기의 본질'입니다.

​

성경에는 이러한 용기를 삶으로 보여준 인물들이 더 있습니다. 그중 하나가 모세입니다.

​

하나님의 부르심 앞에서 모세는 말합니다.

“저는 말을 잘하지 못합니다.”

스스로를 부적합하다고 여긴 그를 통해, 하나님은 홍해를 가르고 이스라엘 백성을 애굽에서 이끄셨습니다.

​

모세의 여정은 두려움이 없어서가 아니라, 완전한 준비가 되었기 때문이 아니라, 두려움 속에서도 한 걸음씩 순종하며 나아간 자의 여정이었습니다.

​

하나님은 모세의 하루하루 작은 결단 속에서 자라나는 믿음을 보셨고, 그 믿음 안에서 용기를 완성하셨습니다.

​

신약의 바울 역시 용기의 사람입니다.

수차례 감옥에 갇히고, 매를 맞고, 생명의 위협을 받으면서도 그는 복음을 전하는 길을 멈추지 않았습니다.

​

그는 이렇게 고백합니다.

“우리가 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도 싸이지 아니하며, 답답한 일을 당하여도 낙심하지 아니하며...” (고린도후서 4:8)

​

바울은 두려움 속에서도 믿음을 붙들기로 수없이 결단했습니다.

​

다메섹 도상에서 예수님을 만난 후, 그는 과거를 내려놓고 푯대를 마음에 세웠습니다. 그리고 그 푯대를 향해 흔들림 없이 달려갔습니다.

​

그는 누구보다도 잘 알고 있었습니다. 자신의 힘이 아니라, 하나님의 도우심이 진정한 용기의 근원임을.

​

“나는 내 힘으로 사는 것이 아닙니다.”

이 믿음이 바울을 더욱 견고하게 만들었고, 그를 끝까지 달려가게 했습니다.

​

그러나 우리는 잘 압니다.

이처럼 본질적인 깨달음을 끝까지 지켜내며, 삶 속에서 날마다 실천하는 일이 얼마나 어려운지를요.

​

현실은 때로 고통스럽고, 반복되는 일상은 지치며, 어느 순간 ‘이제는 끝’이라는 생각이 들기도 합니다.

​

그래서 용기는 감정이 아니라 ‘결단’입니다.

감동이 아니라 ‘실천’이고, 한순간이 아니라 ‘반복’입니다.

​

진정한 용기는 조용하고 소박합니다.

누군가에겐 ‘끝’이라고 여겨지는 그 자리—

​

홀로 떨고 있는 그 순간에 다시 믿음으로 서기로 결심하는 것.

​

그 작고 고요한 선택,

바로 그것이 용기입니다.

​

우리는 살아가며 수많은 ‘끝’ 앞에 서게 됩니다. 관계의 끝, 건강의 끝, 실패의 끝, 홀로 서 있는 외로움의 끝…

​

그러나 용기는 조용히 속삭입니다.

​

“여기서 끝내지 마세요. 끝까지 가보세요.”

​

그 속삭임에 귀 기울이고, 그 손을 붙드는 순간—

우리는 다시 일어설 힘을 얻게 됩니다.

​

오늘이라는 평범한 하루를 견디고 걸어갈 수 있는 힘, 바로 거기서 나옵니다.

​

그러니 오늘도, 우리 마음 한켠에서 조용히 타오르고 있는 그 작은 용기를 바라보십시오.

​

거창한 업적보다 더 귀한 것은, 두려움을 넘어서는 일상의 소박한 결단입니다.

​

그 반복되는 선택이야말로, 우리가 지닌 가장 고귀한 힘입니다.

​

그리고 그 힘의 뿌리에는 여전히 우리를 붙들고 계시는 '하나님의 사랑'이 있습니다.

​

“내가 너와 함께 있으리라.” 이 하나님의 음성이 오늘도 우리 안에서 용기가 되어줍니다.

​

용기란 결국, ‘내 힘으로 가 아니라 하나님의 도우심을 바라보며, 바울처럼 푯대만을 바라보고, 끝까지 가보려는 결단—

​

그리고 그 결단을 하루하루 실천해 나가는 소박하고 겸손한 마음’입니다.

​

이 글을 읽는 여러분, 우리 안에 그 조용하고 단단한 용기가 오늘도 타오르기를 기도합니다.

​

“하나님께서 주신 푯대를 향해 하나님만을 바라보는 믿음으로 끝까지 걸어가길 소망합니다.”

​

이 결단의 고백으로 매일의 삶을 살아가시기를 기도합니다.

​

"A Life Attitude Growing from Ordinary Everyday Moments"

"Courage is not a grand emotion, but a quiet decision made each day in trust of God. Like Niggle’s leaf, David’s ordinary life, and Paul’s confession."

 

Yesterday,  while listening to a sermon, I encountered J.R.R. Tolkien’s short story Leaf by Niggle again.

​

The story’s protagonist, Niggle, is a painter living in a quiet village.

He dreams of painting a grand tree someday,

and devotes all his effort to painting a single leaf from that tree.

​

Niggle had a perfect ideal in his mind and imagined the vast form of the tree,

but reality was not easy.

Neighbors’ endless requests and unexpected events continuously disrupted his work,

and he grew tired and weary.

Each brushstroke he applied quietly in his studio was small and insignificant on its own,

but the heart and sincerity behind it were far from trivial.

Niggle feared he might never complete even that one leaf,

yet patiently continued little by little every day.

​

Eventually, he had to embark on a long journey symbolizing death, leaving the work unfinished.

​

What he left behind was only a single leaf,

but the world he entered after death was astonishingly filled with the complete tree and its landscape he had dreamed of all his life.

God accepted that small and incomplete leaf,

and under God’s care, it became the perfect tree.

​

Recalling this scene, I thought again of David.

​

A shepherd boy guarding sheep amid threats of lions.

A humble boy who was not even recognized by his father or brothers.

But he knew—

that God was watching over his day.

​

That faith was flowing and continuing in David’s ordinary worship.

A life doing one’s best before God even when no one else is watching.

Each day’s choice was courage growing within David.

​

The day he faced Goliath was no different.

To David, it was simply an unbearable moment as one who loved God.

The anger and resolve welling up deep in his heart was worship offered to God,

and that day’s courage sprang from his ordinary life.

King Saul told him to fight with armor and a big sword,

but what David chose that day was just the sling he used to protect sheep—the ordinary worship of his daily life.

​

The world we live in today is no different.

The harsh and heavy reality stands before us like another Goliath.

​

But when we live with the humble heart of painting a single leaf like Niggle,

with the honest devotion of a shepherd boy protecting his sheep like David,

God has already prepared a perfect tree and great victory for us.

​

True courage is trusting God’s work in the place where we stand now and living everyday life as worship.

Courage is not an emotion but a daily decision, a direction of life.

​

Rather than a sudden power to overcome great hardships like in heroic movies,

it is a faith character grown quietly in repeated moments of rising again when we want to give up.

​

Courage is the heart to stand firm in faith even amid human instinctive fears—

that heart is the essence of courage.

​

There are more biblical figures who showed this kind of courage in life. One of them is Moses.

​

When God called him,

Moses said, “I am slow of speech and tongue.”

​

Though he saw himself as unqualified, God parted the Red Sea and led Israel out of Egypt through him.

​

Moses’ journey was not without fear, nor was he a perfectly prepared man,

but he had an attitude to obey step by step even in fear.

God saw the faith growing daily in his small decisions.

God completed courage through him.

​

Paul of the New Testament is also a man of courage.

Though imprisoned many times, beaten, and facing death threats,

he never stopped preaching the gospel.

​

Paul confessed,

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair...” (2 Corinthians 4:8)

He decided countless times to hold on to faith even in fear.

​

After meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus, Paul turned his past around, set his goal in his heart, and ran unwaveringly toward it.

​

He knew better than anyone that the source of courage was not his strength but God’s help.

​

“I do not live by my own strength.”

This faith made Paul stronger and enabled him to go all the way toward the goal.

​

But we know well how difficult it is to keep such fundamental realization until the end and practice it daily in life.

​

Reality is sometimes painful,

repetitive days are exhausting,

and sometimes we reach moments that feel like ‘the end.’

​

So courage is not emotion but a ‘decision.’

Not inspiration but practice,

not a moment but repetition.

​

True courage is quiet and humble.

At the very moment when someone feels like it’s the end—

alone and trembling—

to decide again to stand in faith.

​

That small, quiet choice—that is courage.

​

We stand before many ‘ends’ in life.

​

The end of relationships, health, failures, the loneliness of standing alone...

​

But courage quietly whispers,

​

“Don’t end here. Keep going to the end.”

​

When we listen to that whisper and take that hand—

we gain the strength to rise again.

​

The power to endure and walk through this ordinary day comes from there.

​

So today, look upon that small courage quietly burning in the corner of your heart.

​

More precious than great achievements is the humble daily decision to overcome fear.

​

That repeated choice is the noblest power we have.

​

And at the root of that power is God’s love still holding us.

​

“I will be with you.”

This voice of God becomes our courage even today.

​

In the end, courage is a humble and modest heart that looks to God’s help, like Paul, fixes the goal in the heart, and decides to keep going to the end, practicing that decision day by day.

​

To all of you reading this, I pray that the quiet and steadfast courage inside us burns on today.

​

“I hope we walk to the goal God gave us, looking only to God’s help.”

​

I pray that we live each day with this confession of decision.

​
